20 Amp Outlet: How It Differs From a 15 Amp

A 20 amp outlet is a receptacle rated to carry 20 amps continuously, identified by the sideways T-shaped neutral slot. It belongs on a 20 amp breaker wired with 12 AWG copper. A standard 15 amp outlet has two parallel slots and belongs on a 15 amp breaker with 14 AWG.
Here's the part that confuses people: 15 amp outlets are legal on 20 amp circuits, which is why most receptacles in a 20 amp kitchen look ordinary.

The two receptacle types
15-amp (NEMA 5-15R). Two parallel vertical slots plus a ground. The overwhelming majority of receptacles in any house.
20-amp (NEMA 5-20R). The neutral slot has a sideways branch, forming a T. It accepts both standard 15-amp plugs and 20-amp plugs — the latter having one blade rotated 90 degrees.
The T-slot is a physical key. A 20-amp appliance's plug will not fit a 15-amp receptacle, which means it cannot be connected to a circuit that may not support it.
The asymmetric rule

The NEC allows this where there are multiple receptacles on the circuit. The logic holds up: the branch circuit is wired with 12 AWG conductors protected by a 20-amp breaker, so the wiring is properly protected. No single 15-amp receptacle can pass more than its rating, and the circuit's total is limited by the breaker.
This is why most 20-amp kitchen and bathroom circuits are populated with ordinary 15-amp receptacles.

This is the dangerous direction. The receptacle physically accepts a 20-amp appliance, but the circuit is wired with 14 AWG rated for 15 amps. The outlet would be advertising capacity the conductor doesn't have.
The breaker would eventually trip — but you'd have installed a receptacle whose only purpose is to accept a load the circuit can't carry.
The single-receptacle exception
If a 20-amp circuit serves one receptacle and nothing else, that receptacle must be rated 20 amps. With multiple outlets the load spreads; with a single outlet the receptacle is the entire circuit and must match it.

Which circuits are 20 amps
The NEC requires 20-amp circuits in specific places in a dwelling:
- Kitchen small-appliance circuits — at least two, serving countertop receptacles
- Bathroom receptacles
- Laundry area
General lighting and bedroom receptacle circuits are commonly 15 amps.
How do I know if my circuit is 15 or 20 amps?
Read the breaker. The number on the handle is definitive: 15 or 20.
Don't infer from the receptacle. A 15-amp receptacle is legal on a 20-amp circuit, so its presence tells you nothing.
Don't assume from the room. Kitchens and bathrooms should be 20 amps under current code, but an older home may not have been wired that way and was legal when built.

Do I need to replace my 15 amp outlets?
Replacing a receptacle: match or go down, never up. A 15-amp receptacle is a safe replacement on either circuit. A 20-amp receptacle is only correct on a 20-amp circuit.
A 20-amp appliance won't fit your outlet: that's the system working. It means the circuit isn't rated for it. The answer is a properly wired 20-amp circuit, not an adapter and not swapping the receptacle.

The 80% rule still applies
For a continuous load — three hours or more — you're limited to 80% of the circuit rating:
