Generator Permits and Inspection

Connecting a generator to your house wiring is permitted, inspected work in essentially every US jurisdiction. The reason is straightforward: done wrong, it can kill a utility line worker.
What gets permitted

Gas line sizing is the one that fails inspections. An existing meter and line sized for a furnace, range and water heater often cannot also feed a generator at full load — the fix is an upsized line or a larger meter, and it is better found at design than at inspection.
When is a permit required?
Required:
- Transfer switch installation
- Breaker interlock kit installation
- Inlet box and feeder
- Standby generator installation — electrical and gas
- Any new circuit or panel modification
Not required:
- Running extension cords from a portable generator directly to appliances

Which permits
Electrical — transfer switch or interlock, feeders, inlet box, grounding and bonding. Always.
Gas or plumbing — for standby units on natural gas or propane. The gas line is pressure-tested and inspected separately from the electrical work.
Building — sometimes, for a concrete pad or structural mounting.
Zoning — occasionally, for placement. Some jurisdictions and many HOAs regulate generator location relative to property lines, and some have noise ordinances that apply to the weekly exercise cycle.
Utility coordination — separate from permits, but often the longest item if the gas meter needs upsizing.
What inspectors check
Transfer equipment
- Listed for the application, installed per its instructions
- Break-before-make operation — utility and generator can never be connected simultaneously
- For interlock kits: listed for that specific panel model
- Correct ratings for the service and the generator
Neutral bonding
- Configuration matching the transfer equipment — bonded generator with a switched neutral, floating generator otherwise
- Exactly one neutral-to-ground bond in the system

Conductors and overcurrent protection
- Feeder sized for the generator output and the run
- Generator breaker correctly rated
- Inlet box rated and matched
Grounding
- Grounding electrode system adequate
- Equipment grounding conductors present and correctly terminated
Clearances

- For standby units: generator clearances from windows, doors, vents, and combustible surfaces
Gas (standby)
- Line sizing adequate for the load
- Pressure test passed
- Proper support, protection, and shutoff valve
- Sediment trap where required
Labeling
- Identification of the alternate power source at the service equipment, so anyone working on the system knows a generator is connected
Who pulls it
The licensed contractor should. A homeowner-pulled permit shifts responsibility for compliance onto the homeowner while a licensed contractor does the work.
Some contractors suggest the homeowner pull it to save a fee. Decline — the saving is small and the liability transfer isn't.
Confirm on the quote: who pulls it, and whether the fee is included.
The cost of skipping it
Insurance. A fire or an injury traced to unpermitted electrical work invites scrutiny of the claim. Policy language varies; the exposure is well known.
Utility liability. Backfeed that injures a line worker is a catastrophic exposure, and an unpermitted, uninspected connection is the scenario where it happens.
Sale. Buyers' inspectors compare what they see to permit records. Unpermitted generator work is a standard finding and a standard renegotiation item.
Retroactive permitting. Usually means exposing the work for inspection and correcting to current code — more disruptive and more expensive than doing it properly.
No independent check. The inspection is the only point where someone with no financial interest looks at the work. That's worth something even when you trust the contractor.
Before the inspection
Practical preparation:
- Clear the working space at the panel and transfer switch
- Have the documentation — panel label, interlock kit listing, generator specifications
- Know the answers to basic questions about the installation
- Be present if you can, and ask what the inspector is looking at. It's a free education in your own system

Code editions and local amendments vary. Confirm the adopted edition with your AHJ, and treat manufacturer instructions as governing wherever they are more restrictive.
