Temporary outdoor lighting combines everything that makes electricity risky — weather, cords, connections, ladders and improvised mounting — for a few weeks a year. The rules are short.

Two rules cover most holiday lighting failures: use a GFCI-protected outdoor receptacle with an in-use cover, and respect the manufacturer's maximum number of strings that may be connected end to end — that limit exists because the first plug carries the current of everything after it.
What makes holiday lights outdoor rated?
Check the packaging. Indoor-rated equipment used outdoors degrades: jackets crack in sunlight and cold, moisture reaches conductors, and connections corrode.
You need outdoor or indoor/outdoor ratings on:
- Light strings
- Extension cords — see extension cord safety
- Timers and controls
- Any connector or splitter
Look for a listing mark from a nationally recognized testing laboratory too. Unlisted seasonal lighting is a real category and worth avoiding.
Do outdoor holiday lights need GFCI?
Outdoor receptacles require GFCI protection under recent NEC editions, and this is exactly the scenario it exists for: exposed connections, wet ground, people handling cords.
If your outdoor receptacle isn't GFCI protected, that's worth correcting — and a portable GFCI adapter is a reasonable stopgap for temporary use.

How many strings of lights can you connect?
The number that gets ignored.
Manufacturers state a maximum number of strings that may be connected end to end — printed on the box or a tag on the string.
The reason: the first string carries the current for everything downstream. Exceed the limit and the conductors in that first string are overloaded, which is a heat and fire mechanism at the connector.

When you need more than the limit allows, run separate cords back to the receptacle rather than extending the chain.
How should you hang holiday lights?
Staples and nails pierce the insulation. The damage is invisible from outside and creates a shock and fire path in a wet location.
Use instead:
- Insulated hooks and clips designed for light strings
- Gutter hooks
- Shingle tabs made for the purpose
- Zip ties, loosely
All are inexpensive. None penetrate the cord.
Weatherproofing connections
Where a cord stays plugged in outdoors, the receptacle needs a weatherproof in-use (bubble) cover — one that keeps the connection protected while a cord is plugged in, not just when it's empty.
For cord-to-cord connections:
- Keep them off the ground and out of puddles
- Use cord connection covers or a plastic container as a shelter
- Create a drip loop so water runs away from the connection rather than into it
- Don't bury connections in snow or leaves
Ladders and overhead lines
The non-electrical hazard that causes the most serious injuries.
- Look up before raising a ladder. Contact with the overhead service drop is potentially fatal.
- Keep ladders and lights well clear of the service drop and any utility conductors
- Use a fiberglass ladder, not aluminum, for any work near electrical equipment
- Don't work alone on a roof
- Don't work in wet or icy conditions
Timers and controls
A timer is worth using — it limits run hours and means you're not handling cords in the dark.
- Outdoor-rated timer in a protected location
- Check the timer's load rating against what you've connected

Trees, inflatables and stakes
Live trees dry out and are a fire risk with any heat source; LED strings run much cooler than incandescent.
Never use electric lights on a metallic artificial tree — a fault can energize the whole tree. Illuminate it externally instead.
Inflatables and yard decorations need outdoor-rated cords and GFCI protection, and their blowers run continuously.
Ground stakes — check for buried utilities before driving anything into the ground. Call 811 if you're doing anything substantial.
How many lights can one circuit handle?
Outdoor lighting typically runs off a garage or exterior circuit that's also serving other things.

Inspect before each season
Before hanging anything:
- Check every string for cracked insulation, damaged sockets, exposed conductor
- Check plugs for loose or bent blades
- Discard damaged strings rather than repairing them
- Check cords along their full length
- Test the GFCI
Storage
Damage happens in storage as much as in use:
- Store indoors where possible, or in sealed containers
- Coil loosely — tight wraps stress conductors
- Avoid extreme heat, which ages insulation
- Keep rodents out, since they chew insulation
