Three architectures, and the distinction matters because "off-grid" is often used loosely for what is really grid-tied with backup.

What are the types of solar systems?

Grid-tied with battery backup. Same, plus storage and transfer equipment so the system can island during an outage and keep essential circuits running. The common choice where the grid is available.

Why does off-grid solar cost so much more?

Not because the equipment is exotic — because of what it must be sized for.

A grid-tied system can be sized for annual value, with the grid smoothing every mismatch: cloudy weeks, winter, unusual consumption days.

An off-grid system has no such backstop. It must cover:

  • The worst production month, not the annual average — see solar production by season
  • Consecutive cloudy days, which means days of battery autonomy
  • Peak simultaneous loads, since there's no grid to supply surge
  • Everything, all the time, with no margin for error

Sizing purely on solar and battery for the worst case is usually prohibitively expensive, which is why most off-grid systems include a generator as a seasonal backstop. That lets the solar and battery be sized for typical conditions rather than the extreme, with the generator covering the tail.

When does off-grid solar make sense?

Grid connection is impractical or very expensive. A remote property where running a service line costs more than a complete off-grid system. This is the main legitimate case, and it's genuinely common for rural land.

No utility service is available at all.

You want independence and accept the cost and responsibility — a values decision rather than an economic one, and a legitimate one.

A cabin or seasonal property with modest loads and summer-weighted use, where the worst-month problem largely disappears.

When it doesn't

Grid connection is available and reasonably priced. Going off-grid to escape a utility bill rarely pays, because you're replacing a metered service with capital equipment sized for worst-case conditions — plus maintenance and eventual battery replacement.

You have large or unpredictable loads. Electric heat, air conditioning, EV charging and workshops are hard off-grid.

You want simplicity. Off-grid means you are the utility: monitoring, maintenance, generator servicing, battery management.

What is a hybrid solar system?

For most households with grid access, grid-tied with battery backup gets the best of both:

  • Grid economics — no need to size for worst case, and surplus has value
  • Resilience — essential circuits keep running in an outage
  • Moderate cost compared to off-grid
  • The grid as backup, rather than a generator

Grid-tied realities to know

You maintain everything. No utility crew.
