How to Use a DC Fast Charger: Step by Step

A DC fast charging session is a short, mostly automatic process with three or four decisions that determine whether it takes twenty minutes or fifty. Here's the sequence.
How do you use a DC fast charger?

Step 1 is the one that most changes your experience: a cold battery can halve your charging speed, and preconditioning uses the car's own navigation to warm the pack before you arrive.
Before you arrive
1. Precondition the battery.
This is the single highest-leverage step, and most people skip it. A cold pack cannot accept high current safely, so the vehicle's battery management system clamps power until it warms — which can turn a fast session into a slow one.
Most EVs will warm the pack automatically if you navigate to the charger using the car's own navigation system. A phone app doesn't trigger it. Some vehicles offer a manual preconditioning toggle. 2. Arrive with a low state of charge.
Charging power peaks at a low state of charge and declines from there. Arriving at 15% means you spend the session in the fast part of the charging curve; arriving at 55% means you start already past the peak. Not dangerously low — but there's no benefit to arriving nearly full.
3. Check the station in the app.

At the station
4. Pick the right stall.
Two considerations:
- Power sharing. At some sites, two dispensers share one power cabinet, so a car plugged into the paired stall can halve your rate. Where the site labels this or the app shows it, prefer an unshared stall or one whose pair is empty.
- Cable reach. Park so the cable reaches your charge port without stretching. Charge ports vary by vehicle — rear quarter, front fender, nose — so the "obvious" parking direction isn't always right. Some stations have short cables.
5. Plug in.
Open the charge port, take the connector out of its holster, and insert it firmly until it latches. DC connectors are heavier than you expect and need a deliberate push. The connector carries no power until the handshake completes, so a wet connector on a rainy day is not a hazard.
6. Authenticate.
In rough order of smoothness:
- Plug-and-charge — the car authenticates itself; nothing to do
- In-car integration — start from the vehicle's screen
- Network app — start the session by stall number
- RFID card — tap; works without cell signal
- Credit card tap — where supported
Have at least two of these available. Cell signal at highway sites is not reliable, which is why an RFID card is worth carrying.
7. Confirm it started.
Check that power is actually flowing — the station display and the car both show it. A session that authenticates but doesn't deliver power is common enough that it's worth thirty seconds to verify before you walk away.
What should you do while fast charging?
8. Watch the curve, not the clock.
Power will climb, plateau, and then taper as the pack fills. That's normal. What you're watching for is the point where the rate has dropped enough that continuing isn't worth the time.
9. Leave around 80%.
The last 20% can consume a share of the session time out of all proportion to the energy delivered. On a road trip, two shorter stops beat one long one nearly every time.

10. Set a notification.
Many networks charge idle fees per minute once your session ends and you haven't moved. Set an alert in the app or the car so a finished session doesn't become an expensive one.
Finishing up
11. Stop the session properly.
Stop it from the car, the app, or the station — depending on the network — before unplugging. Pulling the connector mid-session isn't dangerous (the system de-energizes first), but stopping cleanly avoids billing oddities.
12. Return the connector to its holster.

13. Move the car.
Immediately, if the site is busy or idle fees apply.
What if a fast charger will not start?
Session won't start:
- Unplug, wait a moment, reseat the connector firmly
- Try starting from a different method (app instead of card, or vice versa)
- Try a different stall
- Check that your payment method is valid and your account is in good standing
- Call the number on the station — operators can often reset a dispenser remotely
Charging much slower than expected:
- Cold battery — the most common cause in winter
- Hot battery after sustained high-speed driving
- Higher starting state of charge than you thought
- Power sharing with a neighboring stall
- Station derating, or an older cabinet at a site advertised at higher power
- Your vehicle's own maximum acceptance rate

Connector won't release: most vehicles lock the connector during a session. Stop the session, unlock the car, and try again. Many vehicles also have a manual release for the charge port latch — check your manual before you need it.
