A standby generator's entire value proposition is starting unattended after months of sitting idle. That's an unusual thing to ask of an engine, and the weekly exercise cycle is what makes it plausible.
Why does exercising matter?

Run a portable under load, not at idle — a light bulb is not a test. Loading it to something meaningful is what reveals a weak capacitor or a failing regulator while it still does not matter.
What does generator exercise mode actually do?
The controller starts the engine on a schedule and runs it for a short period — commonly 5 to 20 minutes depending on the manufacturer.
In that time:
The battery charges. The single most important function. A standby battery sits on a maintainer for years, and starting the engine exercises and charges it properly. Battery failure is the most common standby generator failure, and this is the main defense.
Oil circulates, coating internal surfaces that would otherwise sit dry.
Fuel circulates, keeping the fuel system wet and conditioned.
Seals and gaskets stay conditioned rather than drying out.
Faults surface. If the unit won't start, you find out on a Tuesday morning with time to fix it — not during an ice storm.
That last one is the point. The exercise cycle is a test, and a test is only useful if you notice the result.
Scheduling it
Most controllers let you set the day, time, and sometimes duration.
Pick a civilized hour. The generator will run for 10-plus minutes at 60–70 dB. Mid-morning on a weekday is typical; 6 a.m. Sunday makes enemies.
Consider your neighbours. Standby generators sit outdoors near property lines, and a weekly self-test at an antisocial hour is a recurring irritation. Some jurisdictions and HOAs have quiet hours that apply.
Weekly vs biweekly. Weekly is the common default. Biweekly halves fuel use and noise, at some cost to battery charging and confidence. If you choose biweekly, check the battery more often.
The cost of exercising
Modest per cycle, continuous over years:

Don't disable it
Most controllers allow it. Doing so is the most common reason a standby generator fails when needed.
The failure chain is predictable: exercise disabled → battery gradually discharges and degrades → outage arrives → generator cranks weakly or not at all → you discover the problem at the worst moment, in the dark, with no time to fix it.
If the noise or the schedule is the problem, reschedule it rather than disabling it.
Load testing
Standard exercise runs the engine without transferring the load. It proves the engine starts and runs — not that the transfer switch works or that the generator can carry the house.
Some systems can be configured to transfer the load during a periodic exercise, which is a more thorough test. It briefly interrupts power to the house, so it's usually scheduled deliberately.
A full load bank test — running the generator at rated output under a controlled load — is the most complete check and is typically part of professional annual service. It's how you find out a generator that starts fine can't actually carry its rating.
What to check yourself
The exercise cycle is automatic, but nobody's watching it. Once a month:
- Did it run? Most controllers log exercise cycles. Check.
- Any fault codes or warning indicators on the controller
- The enclosure clear of debris, leaves, snow, vegetation
- No visible leaks — oil or coolant beneath the unit
- Battery indicator, if the controller shows one
Hearing it run weekly is the informal version of this, and it's why people notice when it stops happening.
