Generator Won't Start? Troubleshooting in Order

Work through these in order. The first four take a minute each and cover most cases.
Why it will not start

Work the list in order: fuel valve open, choke set, oil level, fresh fuel, battery. Between them, stale fuel and a dead battery account for most no-start calls — both entirely preventable with stabiliser and an annual battery replacement.
What should you check first if a generator will not start?
Fuel valve open? Many generators have a fuel shutoff that gets closed for storage and forgotten.
Choke set correctly? Choke ON (closed) for a cold start; OFF (open) once running. Leaving it on after start is a classic reason an engine fires and then dies.
Engine switch on? Separate from the recoil or electric start on many units. Some have both a switch and a key.
Load disconnected? Many generators won't start under load. Disconnect everything, start, stabilize, then connect loads one at a time.
2. Oil level
Most generators have a low-oil shutdown that prevents starting or running when oil is low. It protects the engine, and it's a frequent surprise.
Two things to check:
Actual level, on the dipstick, with the generator level.
Is the generator on a slope? The sensor reads level, not volume. A generator sitting on uneven ground can trip the shutdown with adequate oil in it. Move it to level ground and try again.
Is stale fuel why my generator will not start?
If the generator has been sitting for months, stale fuel is statistically the cause.
Symptoms: won't start at all, starts and immediately dies, runs rough, or surges.
Check: does the fuel smell like gasoline, or like varnish? Old gas has a distinctly sour, stale smell. Is it discolored?
Fix: drain the old fuel, refill with fresh, and try again. If it still won't run, the carburetor is likely clogged.

Also check the fuel cap vent. Most caps have a small vent so air can replace fuel as it's consumed. A blocked vent creates vacuum in the tank and starves the engine — the signature symptom is an engine that runs a few minutes then dies, and restarts after you loosen the cap.
How do you clean a generator carburetor?
The most common actual repair on a small engine, and it's almost always a consequence of stale fuel.
Gum and varnish clog the fine jets and passages. Symptoms match the fuel symptoms above, and persist after fresh fuel.
The quick check: many carburetors have a drain screw on the bowl. Open it and see whether fuel flows freely. Nothing, or a trickle, points to a blockage upstream.
Carburetor cleaning is a well-documented small-engine job — bowl off, jets cleaned, passages blown through. Feasible for a competent DIYer, and a routine job for any small-engine shop.
5. Spark plug
Remove it and look:
- Wet with fuel: flooded. Leave the plug out, pull the recoil a few times to clear the cylinder, dry the plug, reinstall.
- Black and sooty: running rich, or a choke or air-filter problem.
- White or blistered: running lean, or overheating.
- Worn or fouled: replace it. Plugs are inexpensive and a reasonable annual item.
Test for spark: with the plug removed and reconnected to its lead, ground the body against the engine block and pull the recoil. You should see a spark. No spark points at the plug, the ignition coil, or the kill switch circuit.
6. Air filter
A clogged air filter starves the engine of air. Check it; clean or replace it.
Cheap, easy, and often neglected — particularly on a generator stored in a dusty shed.
Why will my electric-start generator not turn over?
If it cranks slowly or clicks:
- Battery voltage. Generator batteries are small and self-discharge over months.
- Terminals clean and tight.
- Charging. Standby generators keep their battery charged; portables generally don't unless a charger is fitted.
A dead battery on a portable electric-start unit isn't a crisis — most have a recoil starter as backup. Use it.

8. Standby generator specifics
Standby units have their own diagnostics:
- Controller fault codes. Note them and check the manual.
- Fuel supply — is the gas valve open? Is the propane tank empty?
- Auto/Manual/Off switch — sometimes left in OFF after service.
- Battery — the single most common standby failure.
Standby generators are meant to be serviced on schedule precisely because their whole value is starting unattended. A standby unit that fails to start during an outage is usually one that hasn't been exercised or serviced.
How do you keep a generator starting reliably?
Run it monthly under load for 15–30 minutes. This is the single most effective habit — it circulates fuel and oil, keeps the carburetor wet, conditions seals, charges the battery, and reveals problems while you have time.
Stabilize the fuel, or store it empty, or run propane.
