Generator Pad and Mounting

The pad does four things: keeps the generator level, keeps it dry, keeps it above snow, and gives it a stable base that doesn't shift.
Cheap to get right at installation. Expensive and disruptive to redo.

Level matters more than people expect. A standby generator's lubrication and fuel systems assume a level installation, and running out of level accelerates wear. Composite pads have largely replaced poured concrete for residential units — faster, and adequate for air-cooled sizes.
What kind of pad does a standby generator need?
Poured concrete. The traditional approach. Stable, permanent, and heavy enough that anchoring is straightforward.
The downside is time: forming, pouring, and curing adds days to the schedule before the generator can be set. In cold weather it adds more.
Manufactured composite pads. Purpose-made pads that install immediately with no curing. Widely used, accepted by manufacturers and inspectors in most cases, and they shorten the installation timeline meaningfully.
Check the installation manual — manufacturers specify what's acceptable, and the inspector will follow it.
Gravel base. Sometimes used under a composite pad for drainage. Not usually acceptable alone for a permanent installation.
Why must a generator be level?
Two reasons:
Oil sensing. Generators have a low-oil shutdown that reads level, not volume. A unit on a slope can trip the shutdown with adequate oil in it — and refuse to start.
Lubrication. Engines are designed to run level. Sustained operation at an angle affects oil distribution.

How high should a generator pad be?
Above snow depth. In snowy regions, a generator at ground level gets buried, and buried means blocked intakes and exhaust. Raised pads and stands exist for exactly this.
Above flood or standing water level. Not in the low spot of the yard, and not where downspouts discharge.
Above splash. Water reaching electrical components is a shock and damage risk.
Deciding this at installation is trivial. Raising a generator afterward means lifting a very heavy machine and redoing the pad, the gas line, and the conduit.
Drainage
The surrounding grade should slope away from the pad.
Water pooling around a generator is bad in every season: standing water in summer, ice in winter, and constant moisture on the enclosure and connections.
For portables, the same principle applies to wherever you set it — meltwater from defrost and rain has to go somewhere.
Does a generator need to be anchored?
Wind zones have uplift requirements, and coastal and high-wind regions specify anchoring explicitly.
Seismic regions have their own requirements.
Manufacturers specify fastening methods and hardware for their units.
Even where not strictly required, anchoring is worth doing: it prevents the unit shifting and stops vibration slowly walking it out of position over years.
Vibration
Generators vibrate. Two consequences worth designing for:
Transmission into the structure. A generator mounted rigidly to or near the house transmits vibration into it, heard indoors as a low hum that no decibel rating predicts. Isolation mounts help.
Fastener loosening. Vibration works fasteners loose over time. Part of annual service should include checking them.
Portable generator platforms
Portables need less, but the same principles apply:
- Level, stable, drained — not mud, not standing water
- Elevated in snow
- Not on a slope, for the oil-sensing reason
- A rubber mat or anti-vibration feet reduce noise transmitted into a deck or patio
Purpose-made generator stands exist, and a couple of concrete pavers works for most situations.

Access
Leave room to work. Service technicians need to open panels, reach the oil drain, change filters, and test the battery.
A generator wedged against a fence with 12 inches of clearance makes every annual service harder and more expensive, and some access is required by the manufacturer anyway.
