Heat Pump Noise Levels: What's Normal and What Isn't

Heat pump noise generates a lot of complaints, and most of them trace to placement rather than equipment. The rated decibel figure is a laboratory measurement; what you hear depends on where the unit sits and what's around it.

Typical levels

Outdoor units are commonly rated from the low 50s to the low 70s dB. Roughly:

Indoor mini split heads are far quieter — often in the 20s dB on low fan, rising to the 40s on high.

Two things about decibels worth knowing:

  • The scale is logarithmic. A 10 dB increase is roughly a doubling of perceived loudness, so 65 dB is meaningfully louder than 55 dB, not slightly.
  • Ratings are measured at a specified distance under controlled conditions. Real installations reflect and reinforce sound.

Why is variable-speed quieter?

A single-stage compressor has one speed: full. Every time it runs, it runs at maximum noise.

A variable-speed unit modulates, spending most of its life at low output — which is both its quiet mode and, in mild weather, most of the year. It ramps up only when conditions demand it.

Placement matters more than the spec

A 55 dB unit in a bad location can be more annoying than a 65 dB unit in a good one.

Avoid inside corners. Two walls meeting behind a unit reflect and concentrate sound. An outside corner or an open wall is much better.

Avoid directly under bedroom windows. Obvious, and routinely done anyway because it was the shortest line-set run.

Consider the neighbors. Property-line placement is a common source of disputes, and some jurisdictions and HOAs have noise limits or setback requirements.

Hard surfaces reflect. A unit surrounded by concrete, brick, or a fence bounces sound. Vegetation and open ground absorb some.

Mounting transmits vibration. A unit bolted rigidly to a wall can transmit vibration into the structure — which is heard indoors as a hum that no decibel rating predicts. Isolation pads and brackets designed for the purpose matter.

Respect clearances. Manufacturer clearances exist for airflow. A restricted unit works harder and is louder, and a fence built tight around one to hide it usually makes the problem worse.

Sounds that are normal

A whoosh or clunk during defrost. The reversing valve changing position and refrigerant pressures equalizing. Happens at the start and end of each cycle, and can be startling the first time. See heat pump defrost cycle.

Louder operation in cold weather. The compressor works harder and often runs faster to maintain capacity.

Brief clicking at start and stop. Relays and contactors.

A gentle hum or whir while running.

Water dripping or trickling during and after defrost.

Fan speed changing on variable-speed units as they modulate.

Report these early. Most are cheap fixes at the noise stage and expensive ones after the failure.

Reducing noise on an existing system

Check for loose panels. The most common rattle, and free to fix.

Confirm the mounting. Vibration transmitted into a wall or a deck frame is a frequent cause of indoor noise. Isolation pads under a ground unit, or proper bracket isolation on a wall mount.

Clear the airflow path. A restricted unit is a louder unit. Trim vegetation back to clearance.

Add a sound barrier, carefully. A solid fence panel between the unit and the listener can help — but only if it doesn't restrict airflow. Never enclose a unit on multiple sides.

Don't build a box around it. The single most common well-intentioned mistake. It restricts airflow, raises running cost, shortens equipment life, and often makes noise worse through reflection.

Buying for quiet

  1. Variable speed, if noise matters to you. This is the biggest lever.
  2. Check the published rating, and ask for the low-speed figure specifically rather than the maximum.
  3. Plan placement at quote stage. Moving the unit costs almost nothing on paper and a great deal after installation.
  4. Ask about sound-reducing options — some manufacturers offer compressor blankets or night modes that cap speed.
