Portable Air Conditioners: Why Single-Hose Units Disappoint

Portable air conditioners solve a real problem — cooling a room where a window unit can't be installed. They also have a design flaw that most buyers don't discover until they're using one.

Single-hose units fight themselves: exhausting air out of the room creates negative pressure, pulling hot outside air in through every gap. If the choice is open, a window unit wins on efficiency and noise every time.
The single-hose problem
Every air conditioner needs to reject heat outdoors. A portable does this by blowing hot air through a hose out a window.
Here's the issue: that exhaust air comes from inside the room.
Air blown out has to be replaced, and it's replaced by outside air pulled in through every gap in the building — around doors, through the window kit, through the walls. On a hot day, that's hot air being drawn in continuously to replace the air you just conditioned.
The unit ends up cooling a partially refreshed supply of outdoor air rather than recirculating the room's air. A meaningful share of the nominal capacity is spent on that, which is why single-hose portables so often "can't keep up" despite a BTU rating that looks adequate.
The effect is worst exactly when you need it most: the hotter it is outside, the more the infiltrated air costs you.
Dual-hose units
A dual-hose portable has two ducts: one drawing outdoor air in for the condenser, one exhausting it back out.
The condenser air loop is now separate from the room air. The unit isn't depressurizing the room, so it isn't pulling hot outdoor air in through the walls.
They're less common, usually cost more, and are still not as efficient as a window unit — but they remove the single biggest flaw. If you're buying a portable, this is the specification that matters most.
Why a window unit beats both
A window air conditioner sits in the window with the condenser outdoors. There's no ducting, no exhaust from indoor air, and no depressurization.
For the same BTU rating, a window unit is:
- More efficient — no infiltration penalty, no duct heat loss
- Quieter indoors — the compressor is outside the window plane
- Usually cheaper
- Better at holding temperature in hot weather

When is a portable right?
Genuine cases:
- Casement or sliding windows that won't accept a window unit
- Rental restrictions or HOA rules prohibiting window units
- You need to move it between rooms
- Structural limits — a window frame that can't support a unit's weight
- Temporary need — a few weeks a year, where installation effort matters more than efficiency
Not a good reason: "it seemed easier". A window unit is a one-time installation; a portable is a permanent efficiency penalty plus a hose across your room.
Getting the most from one
Seal the window kit. The panels supplied are thin and leaky. Foam board, weatherstripping, and tape around the kit make a real difference — you're otherwise inviting in the hot air the unit is fighting.
Insulate the exhaust hose. It runs hot, and every bit of heat radiating off it inside the room is heat the unit has to remove again. Hose insulation wraps are cheap.
Keep the hose short and straight. Long, coiled hoses lose more heat and restrict airflow. Most units come with more hose than you need.
Close the door. Confining the cooled space matters more with a portable than with any other type, because of the infiltration issue.
Empty or drain the condensate. Some units are self-evaporating; others need a tank emptied or a drain line. A full tank shuts the unit off.
Clean the filter. Same as any AC — restricted airflow kills capacity.
Sizing
Same baseline as window units — roughly 20 BTU per square foot, adjusted for sun, occupancy, and kitchens. See window AC sizing guide.
One caveat: portables often quote two ratings, an older ASHRAE figure and a DOE/SACC figure. The SACC number accounts for the infiltration penalty and is much closer to real performance. A unit advertised as 14,000 BTU ASHRAE may be around 8,000–10,000 BTU SACC.

Ventless units are not air conditioners
Devices sold as "ventless air conditioners" or "air coolers" are evaporative coolers. They cool by evaporating water, which works well in dry climates and does essentially nothing in humid ones — and they add moisture to the air.

Any real air conditioner must reject heat outdoors. There is no exception to this.
The alternative worth considering
If you're cooling one room every summer and a window unit isn't possible, price a single-zone ductless mini split before committing to a portable.
