Electrical Shocks and Tingles From Appliances

A mild shock or tingle from an appliance is one of the few household electrical symptoms where you are directly, physically part of the fault path. That's the thing to understand: current is already flowing through you.
A tingle is never normal

Anything that repeats is a genuine fault, and the fact that it is mild says more about your footwear and the floor than about how dangerous the fault is. GFCI protection trips at about 5 milliamps — well below the level that stops a heart — which is why it belongs anywhere water and electricity meet.
What does a tingle actually mean?
Under normal conditions, current flows out on the hot conductor and back on the neutral. Nothing flows through the appliance case, and nothing flows through you.
A tingle means some current is leaking to the case and finding a path to ground — and you're providing part of that path.
The amount is small enough that you feel it rather than being injured. But the amount depends on the resistance of the path, and your body's resistance varies enormously:
- Dry hands, dry shoes, dry floor → high resistance → a tingle
- Wet hands, bare feet, damp concrete → dramatically lower resistance → the same fault delivers far more current
So the fault that gives you a barely noticeable buzz in the kitchen can be genuinely dangerous in a wet basement or a bathroom. The fault didn't change — the conditions did.

Common causes
A failed or missing equipment ground. If the appliance's ground path is broken or was never there, a leak inside the appliance can't trip the breaker — the case just sits energized. This is a specific risk on ungrounded circuits. See two-prong outlets and ungrounded circuits.
Internal insulation failure in the appliance. Motor windings and heating elements degrade, and a partial failure can energize the case.
A wiring fault — a conductor contacting a metal box, damaged insulation, or a miswired device.

Reversed polarity at a receptacle.

Shocks from plumbing or the sink
Worth its own mention because it alarms people and it should.
Feeling a shock at a metal faucet, sink or bathtub suggests either a bonding problem, or current finding a path through the plumbing, or a fault elsewhere in the system using the plumbing as a return path.
This is not a fixture problem to avoid. It indicates something about the electrical system, and it's a wet location where shock severity is highest.
Treat it as urgent.
What should you do if you feel a tingle?
- Stop using the appliance or fixture
- Unplug it if you can do so without touching the metal case — grasp the plug, not the appliance
- Turn off the breaker for that circuit if you can't safely unplug it
- Test whether it follows the appliance. Plug it into a different circuit. If the tingle follows, the appliance is faulty; if it stays with the location, the wiring is.
- Call a licensed electrician — and for plumbing-related shocks, do this promptly rather than scheduling around it
Do not:
- Keep using it because it's only mild
- Wear shoes as your mitigation strategy
- Cut off the grounding pin to "stop the tingle" — that removes the protection entirely
- Use a two-prong adapter to break the ground path
Those last two come up more than they should. Removing the ground stops the symptom by removing the safety system.
Where GFCI protection fits
A GFCI detects the current imbalance created by exactly this scenario — current leaving on the hot and not returning on the neutral, because it's going through you — and opens the circuit in a fraction of a second.
That's genuine protection, and it's why GFCI requirements concentrate in kitchens, bathrooms, laundry, garages, basements and outdoors.
But it's a safety layer, not a fix. The underlying fault still exists. Adding a GFCI and considering the matter closed leaves an energized case that will trip the device every time it faults.

What the electrician will check
- Continuity of the equipment grounding conductor for that circuit
- Whether the circuit is actually grounded, and whether any bootleg ground exists
- Polarity at the receptacle
- Voltage on the appliance case relative to ground
- The appliance's internal insulation resistance
- Bonding of plumbing and gas piping, if fixtures are involved
- Neutral integrity, especially with multi-wire circuits
- The panel — grounding electrode connections, neutral-ground bonding at the correct point only
Plug-in testers can't distinguish a proper ground from a bootleg ground, which is one reason this needs instruments rather than a hardware-store checker.
Other symptoms to mention
Tell them if you've also seen:
- Flickering lights, especially whole-house — see flickering lights causes

Shocks combined with whole-house flickering in particular can indicate a neutral problem, which is serious and urgent.
The bottom line
A tingle means current is leaking to something you touch and using you as part of its path to ground. How badly that goes depends on how wet you and the floor are, not on the fault — which is why the same problem can be a mild buzz one day and a dangerous shock the next. Stop using the appliance, test whether the symptom follows it to another circuit, and call an electrician. Never solve it by removing a grounding pin.
