Of all household electrical symptoms, this is the one with the least ambiguity. A burning smell at a receptacle means something is hot enough to degrade materials, which is the stage immediately before ignition.

A "fishy" smell from a receptacle is the classic signature of overheating thermoset plastic in a device body. It is not a mystery odour — it means a connection is running hot right now. Turn off the circuit at the panel before investigating.

Do this now

  1. Turn off the breaker for that circuit. If you don't know which one, turn off the main.
  2. Unplug anything you can reach safely — don't reach behind or into a hot device.
  3. Don't use that outlet until it's been inspected.
  4. Call a licensed electrician.
  5. If you see smoke, sparks, scorching or melting — or if the smell is strong and spreading — get out and call the fire service. Don't investigate.

The fishy smell

A fishy or urine-like odor is a recognized sign of overheating electrical components. Certain plastics and insulation give off that particular smell as heat degrades them.

Treat it exactly like a burning smell. People frequently spend days looking for a dead animal in a wall when the actual source is a receptacle.

What's causing it

Nearly always a high-resistance connection generating heat.

The mechanism is a runaway:

  1. A connection loosens or oxidizes
  2. Resistance rises at that point
  3. Current through resistance generates heat
  4. Heat accelerates the loosening and oxidation
  5. Repeat, hotter each time

Common specific causes:

Loose screw terminals at the device.

A failing wire nut connection in the box.

An overloaded circuit running near or over its capacity for extended periods.

A failing appliance or cord plugged into the outlet — check whether the smell follows the appliance to another outlet.

Why isn't "it stopped" reassuring?

A common and dangerous sequence: the smell appears when a heater is running, then goes away when it's unplugged, so it gets forgotten.

The heat came from current through a bad connection. Remove the current and the heat stops — but the bad connection is still there, now slightly worse than before. The next time significant load is applied, it starts hotter.

A smell that stops is a problem that's idle, not resolved.

What an electrician will check

  • The receptacle and its terminations — the usual culprit
  • Every connection in the box, including wire nuts
  • Evidence of heat — discoloration, melted plastic, charred insulation
  • The conductors' condition, especially in older wiring
  • Whether the circuit is overloaded for its rating
  • The breaker and its connection at the panel
  • Other devices on the same circuit, since daisy-chained connections mean the fault may be upstream
  • Whether the wiring is aluminum, which changes the remediation entirely

They may find the fix is a single device replacement. They may find the circuit needs work. Either way it's diagnosed rather than guessed.

What should you never do about a burning smell?

Don't just replace the receptacle yourself and move on. The device may be a symptom rather than the cause — the connection behind it, or a device upstream, may be the actual problem. And if the wiring is aluminum, an ordinary replacement device makes it worse.
