What's good
- No installation at all where a 14-50 receptacle already exists — the cheapest route to Level 2
- Travels: goes in the trunk to a second home, a rental, or the next house
- Plug-and-play version skips the app entirely if the car already schedules its own charging
What's not
- 16 ft cable is short — measure from the outlet to the car's port before buying
- 40 A ceiling, and a 14-50 receptacle must be on a properly sized 50 A circuit
- J1772 only; NACS cars need an adapter
- No hardwired option, so it can't reach the 48 A the wall units do
Our verdict
The charger to buy when the electrical work is the problem, not the charger. If there's already a 14-50 in the garage — an old range or welder circuit, or a dryer outlet an electrician has moved — this plugs in and charges at essentially wall-unit speed for a fraction of the cost. Check the circuit is genuinely rated 50 A first; the outlet existing is not the same as the wire behind it being right.
