Best Portable Solar Panels for Balconies and Power Stations

A portable solar panel and a power station are the version of balcony solar that needs no permission from the utility: the panel charges the station's battery, and you plug lamps, a laptop or a fridge into the station. Nothing feeds the apartment's wiring, so the state plug-in solar laws, the utility paperwork and the outlet-backfeed safety question don't apply. The trade-off is that the energy only reaches what is plugged into the station, and you carry it there.

The panel's rating is a lab number. Standard test conditions are 1,000 W/m² of sunlight hitting a 25 °C panel squarely. A panel hung flat on a railing, shaded by the floor above for part of the day, or hot in summer sun delivers well under its label. Treat 200 W as the ceiling and size expectations with the solar output calculator, not the box.

Compatibility is electrical, not brand loyalty. The panel's open-circuit voltage (Voc) has to sit inside the power station's solar input range, its current should be within the input's limit, and the connector has to match or have an adapter. Every panel here lists those figures from its maker's spec sheet, so you can check them against your station's manual before buying.

How we picked

  • Open-circuit voltage, operating voltage and current published by the maker, so compatibility can be checked against the station
  • A connector that fits the station directly, or a stated adapter
  • Unfolded length and weight that suit a balcony railing or floor
  • Water rating and the maker's own caveats about leaving it outside
  • Published warranty terms

We do not accept payment for placement and we do not publish star ratings we did not measure. Specifications come from each manufacturer's published spec sheet.

The picks

Jackery's 200 W folding bifacial panel: TOPCon cells, IP68, about 14 lb, and the cable and adapter to plug straight into any current Explorer station.

Best for: Recharging a Jackery Explorer 1000 v2 (or any Jackery) from a balcony

  • Jackery lists it as compatible with all its power stations: DC8020 cable in the box, plus an adapter for older DC7909 ports
  • Bifacial: Jackery rates the back side at over 70% of the front, so light bouncing off a pale balcony floor or wall adds output
  • USB-A and USB-C on the panel charge a phone directly, with no power station in the loop
  • Almost 7.5 ft long unfolded: measure the railing or floor run before buying
  • IP68 on paper, but Jackery's own FAQ says to avoid heavy rain and submersion, so it is not a leave-out-all-season panel
  • DC8020 output is Jackery-specific; other brands' stations need a third-party adapter
  • The 225 W bifacial figure assumes a bright reflective surface behind the panel; a dark floor or a panel tied flat to a railing gets much less

A 200 W folding N-type panel with a standard MC4 output and a 45 W USB-C port, the brand-neutral choice for stations that aren't Jackery.

Warranty
2-year material and workmanship
  • MC4 is the common solar plug: with the right adapter cable it feeds most brands of power station
  • Renogy documents both series and parallel wiring, so two panels can be combined to suit the station's input
  • 45 W USB-C on the panel can charge a laptop or tablet directly
  • Three kickstand angles help aim it at the sun from a balcony floor
  • No adapter in the box: budget for an MC4-to-your-station cable
  • IP65 is splash-resistant, a step below the Jackery panels' IP68
  • Not bifacial, so a reflective balcony floor adds nothing

A 7 lb, 100 W bifacial panel that folds to roughly 17 in square, for small balconies and stations that don't need 200 W.

  • About half the weight of the 200 W panels and under 5.5 ft unfolded: fits a narrow balcony
  • Integrated aluminum stand plus stake holes; Jackery quotes a 60-second setup
  • Bifacial, with the same cable and DC7909 adapter as the bigger SolarSaga
  • Not compatible with the Explorer 300 v2, 300, 300D or 240D for recharging, per Jackery
  • 100 W rated: one panel takes Jackery's own estimate of about 15 hours to fill an Explorer 1000 v2 in optimal sun
  • Shortest warranty of the three
