Start with your lawn, not your lot. Every maker rates its mowers by mowed area (a quarter acre, an acre), and that figure assumes the robot runs most of the day and returns to charge as often as it needs. Measure the grass you actually want cut, then pick a model rated above it. A mower rated well beyond your lawn finishes sooner; one rated below it falls behind in peak growing season.

Navigation is the real choice, and the old answer, a boundary wire buried around the lawn, is no longer the default. RTK mowers position themselves by satellite, corrected to centimeter accuracy by a reference station: either an antenna you mount in the yard or, where coverage exists, a network service. RTK needs a view of the sky, so it is strongest on open lawns and weakest under heavy tree cover or tight against tall walls, which is why current models fuse it with cameras. LiDAR-and-vision mowers skip satellites entirely and navigate by recognizing the yard around them, so they shrug off trees and walls but need fixed features within sensor range to work from. An open lawn favors RTK; a treed, fenced or built-up yard favors LiDAR.

Then the terrain numbers. Slope ratings are given in percent (rise over run, so 45% is about 24° and 80% is about 39°) and are measured by the maker on dry grass; treat them as a ceiling, not a target. Cutting width sets how fast a mower covers ground, which is why bigger-area models have wider decks or two discs. Check the cutting-height range against how long you keep your grass, and whether it is set from the app or by hand. Battery figures here are in amp-hours (Ah) as the makers publish them; none of these makers lists pack voltage, so a watt-hour figure is not given.

Every pick here recharges itself at its station, which runs from a standard outlet through the supplied power adapter. None of the makers publishes energy per charge, so if you want the number, a plug-in power meter on the station's supply gives you your own kilowatt-hours to multiply by your rate.

How we picked

  • Rated lawn area, slope rating and cutting width as the maker publishes them
  • A stated navigation method (RTK, network RTK, LiDAR, vision) and what it needs from your yard
  • Obstacle detection, lift and tilt safety, and anti-theft alerts
  • Weather protection rating and rain handling
  • Warranty terms, including the battery
  • No wire to bury for any pick on this page

We do not accept payment for placement and we do not publish star ratings we did not measure. Specifications come from each manufacturer's published spec sheet.

The picks

A four-wheel-drive robot mower for lawns up to a quarter acre that maps and navigates with 360° 3D LiDAR and stereo cameras, so there is no boundary wire and no RTK antenna to install.

Best for: A sloped or tree-shaded quarter-acre yard where you want no wire and no antenna

Warranty
3 years
  • Nothing to install in the yard: no perimeter wire to bury and no RTK antenna to mount and power
  • LiDAR does not depend on a clear view of the sky, so tree cover and tall walls that weaken satellite positioning are not its weak spot
  • 80% slope rating with true four-wheel drive, the steepest of the quarter-acre picks here
  • Cutting height is changed from the app, not a knob on the mower
  • No RTK at all: positioning rests on LiDAR recognizing the yard's fixed features (Dreame states a 164 ft detection range), so a wide open lawn with little structure nearby is worth asking about before you buy
  • 7.9 in cutting width is narrow, which is why it is rated for a quarter acre
  • Two separate lawns need a second charging station: Dreame says mapping starts from the station

A quarter-acre wire-free mower that positions itself with tri-frequency Network RTK fused with a 140° camera, plus all-wheel drive with electronic stability control for slopes up to 45%.

Best for: An open quarter-acre lawn with good sky view and Network RTK coverage

Rated area
0.25 acre (16 hours to cover it, per Navimow)
Navigation
Network RTK + vision (EFLS NRTK); no wire; local antenna only where NRTK is unavailable
Max slope
45% (24°)
Cutting width
7.1 in (1 disc, 5 blades)
Cutting height
2–3.6 in, manual adjustment
Battery
5.1Ah; 120 min mowing per charge, 120 min to recharge
Obstacles
150+ object types (VisionFence, 140° RGB camera); 1.57 in steps
Weather protection
IP66; weather-forecast adaptive
Noise
59 dB(A)
Weight
27.12 lb
Connectivity
Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, cellular (1 year of Connect+ free, then a paid annual renewal)
Warranty
3 years device and charging station, 2 years battery
  • Network RTK removes the local antenna where coverage exists, and Navimow includes NRTK access at no extra cost
  • Satellite positioning does not depend on the yard having walls or trees to recognize, so open lawns suit it
  • The quietest rated mower on this page at 59 dB(A)
  • RTK needs satellite signal: Navimow fuses vision to help under trees and near walls, but heavy cover is the classic RTK weak spot
  • Antenna-free only where Network RTK covers your address; Navimow has a postcode checker, and the box includes a GNSS antenna kit otherwise
  • 45% slope rating is well below the LiDAR and X4 picks here
  • Cutting height is set by hand on the mower, not from the app

The larger A3 chassis: the same LiDAR-plus-vision navigation and 80% slope rating, with a 15.8 in dual-disc deck and a 7.5Ah battery for lawns up to 0.87 acre.

Best for: A half- to seven-eighths-acre lawn with slopes, trees or a complicated layout

Rated area
0.87 acre (3,500 m²)
Navigation
360° 3D LiDAR + binocular AI vision (OmniSense 3.0); no wire, no RTK
Max slope
80% (38.7°)
Cutting width
15.8 in (40 cm), dual disc
Cutting height
1.2–3.9 in (3–10 cm), set in the app
Battery
7.5Ah
Obstacles
300+ object types avoided; crosses 2.2 in obstacles; 31.5 in narrow passages
Edge cut
Under 1.2 in from the boundary (EdgeMaster 2.0)
Weather protection
IPX6 (can be hosed down)
Noise
Under 65 dB
Weight
23.9 kg (52.7 lb)
Connectivity
Wi-Fi + built-in 4G; 3 years of 4G data included
Warranty
3 years
  • Twice the A3 AWD's cutting width, with the same no-wire, no-RTK setup
  • Tighter edge cut than the smaller A3 (under 1.2 in), so less string-trimming along borders
  • Dreame's LiDAR range rises to 230 ft (70 m) on the Pro, which matters more on a bigger lot
  • Needs a 31.5 in passage, so a narrow side gate the smaller A3 fits through may block it
  • Over 50 lb: carrying it between separate lawns is a real lift
  • Same LiDAR caveat as the A3: very open ground with few fixed features nearby is the case to check

  • Highest slope rating on this page (84%) and the widest deck (17 in)
  • Widest cutting-height range here, adjusted automatically
  • 360° cameras plus visual-inertial odometry back up RTK where the sky view is poor
  • The loudest and heaviest mower here: 68 dB(A) and nearly 64 lb
  • RTK still needs satellite signal and, without Network RTK at your address, a local antenna

  • The largest rated area on this page without any RTK or wire
  • Battery is the only change from the 3500, so everything that suits a 3500 yard carries over
  • Same 15.8 in deck as the 3500: the extra area comes from longer runs, not faster cutting
  • On an open acre-plus lot, RTK positioning has the easier job; confirm the LiDAR has fixed features to work with
