What Appliances Use Gas in a Home?

Before planning any electrification, you need an accurate list of what actually burns fuel in your house. It takes about fifteen minutes and it's the foundation for everything else.

Most homeowners find fewer gas appliances than they expected — and occasionally one they'd forgotten about entirely.

How do you find every gas appliance in a house?

Every gas appliance connects to the meter through piping, and each one should have a shutoff valve near it. So the audit method is simple: start at the meter and trace where the piping goes.

Start outside at the gas meter (or the propane tank). Note where the line enters the building.

How do you tell if an appliance runs on gas?

Water heater. Gas: a flue pipe rising from the top, a burner access panel near the bottom, a gas line with a shutoff. Electric: no flue, no gas line, an electrical conduit or cable entering the top or side. If there's a flue, it's combustion.

Furnace vs boiler. A furnace heats air and connects to ducts. A boiler heats water and connects to pipes running to radiators or radiant floor loops. Both can be gas. See furnace vs boiler.

Range or cooktop. Gas: burners with flame ports and grates, plus a gas line behind the appliance. Electric: either a flat glass surface (induction or radiant) or exposed coils. A dual-fuel range has a gas cooktop and an electric oven — it still counts as gas.

Dryer. Gas: a gas line with a shutoff behind it, plus the vent duct. Electric: a large 240V plug (commonly a NEMA 14-30 or 10-30) and no gas line. See the NEMA plug chart if you're unsure what the plug is.

Fireplace. A gas fireplace or insert has a gas line and usually a control valve or key. A wood-burning fireplace with a gas starter line still has a gas connection.

Anything outdoors. Pool and spa heaters are easy to forget and can use substantial gas. Patio heaters and grill lines keep the service active.

What does your gas bill tell you?

Two useful signals from the bill itself:

Seasonal pattern. If usage is high in winter and near-zero in summer, gas is essentially all space heating. If there's meaningful year-round baseline usage, that's water heating, cooking or a pool heater.

Summer baseline. Your lowest-usage month approximates the non-heating gas load. That number tells you how much of your gas bill would survive converting only the furnace — often more than people expect, which is a good argument for converting the water heater too.

The fixed service charge. Find it on the bill and note the amount. That's what you pay every month regardless of usage, and it only disappears when the last gas appliance goes. See electrification and your electric bill.

How do you plan gas appliance replacements?

For each gas appliance found, record four things:

  1. What it is and its approximate age
  2. The electric replacement you'd choose — see gas vs electric appliances compared
  3. The electrical circuit it would need — most large electric appliances need a dedicated 240V circuit
  4. Any physical constraint — venting, placement, air volume, cookware

A worked example of what an audit finds

A common suburban result:

  • Gas furnace, 18 years old → near end of life, convert to a heat pump next
  • Gas water heater, 9 years old → mid-life, plan for a heat pump water heater
  • Gas range, working fine → convert during a future kitchen update; needs a new 240V circuit
  • Electric dryer already → nothing to do
  • Gas fireplace, decorative → the last item, converted to finish the job and drop the meter charge

That list turns an abstract goal into four dated decisions, one of which is urgent and three of which aren't.

The bottom line

Trace the piping from the meter and walk the utility room, kitchen, laundry, living areas and exterior. Record each appliance's age, its electric replacement, the circuit it would need, and any physical constraint.
