What Is Home Electrification?

Home electrification sounds like a large, abstract project. In practice it's a short and specific list: the appliances in your house that burn fuel, replaced over time with electric ones — plus enough electrical capacity to run them.

Which appliances does home electrification replace?

Why is electrification possible now?

The reason this became a mainstream option rather than a fringe one is a change in the technology, specifically heat pumps.

Older electric heating meant resistance heat — a coil that converts electricity to heat at roughly one unit out per unit in. That's expensive to run almost everywhere.

A heat pump doesn't generate heat, it moves it, which lets it deliver several units of heat per unit of electricity consumed. The same principle applies to a heat pump water heater and a heat pump clothes dryer.

Does electrification need a panel upgrade?

Here's what makes electrification an electrical project and not just an appliance project.

Each electric replacement is a new load on your panel — and heating, water heating and cooking are large ones. A house whose service was sized when heating, hot water, cooking and drying were all gas may not have room for all four in electric form.

How it actually happens

Very few people electrify a house in one project. The normal pattern is replace on failure:

  3. The range gets replaced during a kitchen update → induction
  4. The dryer dies → electric

What does electrification do to your bills?

Two bills move in opposite directions: electricity up, gas down.

Whether the total goes up or down depends on three things:

  • Your local electricity and gas rates, which vary enormously by region — see electricity rates by state

  • Your climate, which determines how much heating you actually buy

What is electrification not?

Worth clearing up, because these get conflated:

  • It's not solar. Solar generates electricity; electrification changes what consumes it. They pair well but are independent decisions.
