If your house is at a reasonable temperature and still feels wrong, the variable is almost always humidity. And the instinctive response — turn the thermostat down — makes it colder without making it better, at a higher cost.
What indoor humidity should you aim for?

Winter targets are lower for a specific reason: higher indoor humidity condenses on cold surfaces. Window frames, exterior wall corners, and unheated closets are where you'll see it first, and persistent condensation causes rot and mold.
The practical winter rule is to lower humidity until condensation on windows stops.
Why does humidity matter more than temperature?
The body sheds heat by evaporating sweat. Humid air slows evaporation, so the same temperature feels hotter.
This is why 78°F at 45% humidity is comfortable and 74°F at 65% is not. Chasing comfort with temperature when moisture is the problem is expensive and doesn't work.
Too little humidity has its own costs: dry skin and airways, static, and shrinkage in wood floors and furniture.
Why is my house humid with the AC running?
An air conditioner dehumidifies as a side effect of cooling. Moisture condenses on the cold evaporator coil and drains away — but that takes time with the coil cold.
An oversized system cools the air to the setpoint quickly and shuts off before much moisture has condensed. The thermostat is satisfied; the house is cold and clammy.

How do you lower indoor humidity in summer?
Fan on AUTO, not ON. Important and counterintuitive. With the fan running continuously, moisture that condensed on the coil during the cooling cycle re-evaporates into the air stream after the compressor stops — putting it straight back into the house. AUTO stops the fan with the compressor.
Fix the sources. Bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans, vented outdoors, actually used. A clothes dryer vented outdoors. A vapor barrier in a crawl space. Gutters and grading directing water away from the foundation.

Right-size the AC at replacement time.
Don't over-ventilate on humid days. Bringing in outdoor air when it's more humid than indoor air adds moisture you then pay to remove.
How do you add humidity in winter?
Homes get dry in winter because cold outdoor air holds little moisture, and when it leaks in and warms up its relative humidity drops.
Air sealing reduces that infiltration, which is the underlying cause. It also reduces heating cost — the same fix twice.
A humidifier — portable or whole-house — adds moisture directly. Whole-house units mount on the ductwork.
Watch the windows. Condensation is the signal you've gone too far. Lower the setting.
Measuring
Buy a hygrometer. They're inexpensive, and guessing at humidity is how people end up treating the wrong problem.
Place one in the main living area and one in the basement, which is usually the dampest part of the house.
Basements
Basements are humid because they're cool — the surfaces are below the dew point of the air, so moisture condenses on them — and because ground moisture migrates through concrete.
Dehumidification is usually necessary, not optional. Aim to keep the basement in the same 40–50% range.

What are the signs of a humidity problem?
Too humid: clammy feel at reasonable temperatures, musty smell, condensation on cold-water pipes, mold in bathrooms or on closet walls, wood swelling, and a house that never feels cool no matter the setpoint.
Too dry: static shocks, dry skin and throat, gaps opening in wood floors, cracking furniture joints, and instruments going out of tune.
The one-line summary
If the house is cold and still uncomfortable, stop adjusting the thermostat and measure the humidity. The cheapest fix is usually moisture removal, not more cooling.
