Solar on the roof and a generator in the yard are not rivals. They just have to be kept from touching.
Short answer: yes, a generator and solar panels can be used in the same home, with one rule: a grid-tied solar inverter must never be connected to a live generator. The inverter is built to synchronize with the utility and push power into it. Faced with a generator instead, it would try to do the same thing, and a generator cannot absorb power coming back at it. So a transfer switch has to disconnect the solar along with the grid whenever the generator runs. In a battery system, the generator plugs into a dedicated generator input and the gateway or hybrid inverter decides when it is allowed on.
Why solar and a generator can't share a bus
A grid-tied inverter listens for the utility's voltage and frequency, locks onto them, and exports whatever the panels make. Anti-islanding, the behavior that shuts the inverter off when the grid fails, is covered in why solar shuts off in a blackout.
A running generator looks enough like a grid for the inverter to try to sync to it. Two things then go wrong:
- Backfeed. If the house uses less than the panels produce, the surplus flows into the generator. Generators are sources, not sinks, and can be damaged by it.
- Instability. A generator's frequency drifts with load. The inverter chases it, the generator's governor chases the inverter, and the result can be hunting, nuisance trips or both.
That is why every design for solar plus generator keeps them electrically separate unless a battery inverter is in the middle managing both.
Grid-tied solar with a standby or portable generator
With no battery, the design is a transfer switch. Transfer switch explained covers the device itself; what matters here is where it goes relative to the solar.
Solar breaker on the utility side of the transfer switch
The clean layout. The solar inverter's breaker lands in the main panel ahead of the transfer switch, or in a service-side connection, so it stays with the utility. When the generator takes over the backed-up loads, the solar is on the dead utility side and stays off. The generator never sees it.
Solar breaker downstream of the transfer switch
If the solar breaker sits in the panel that the generator feeds, the inverter sees generator power every time the generator runs. This layout is wrong unless the equipment is specifically designed and listed for it. An inspector reviewing a generator permit on a solar home will look for exactly this.
Interlock-kit homes
A generator interlock kit turns the main panel into the transfer equipment: the main breaker and the generator breaker can't both be on. If the solar breaker is in that same panel, it is downstream of the interlock, which puts the solar on the generator bus. Homes with an interlock kit and solar need the solar moved ahead of the interlock, a separate backed-up subpanel, or a different approach. See generator interlock kit vs transfer switch and have an electrician review the layout before adding either one.
Solar plus battery plus generator
A battery system changes the picture because its inverter can form a grid of its own during an outage. The device that separates the house from the utility is a microgrid interconnect device; see what is a microgrid interconnect device. Whether a generator can join that island depends entirely on the battery maker's design, and the two biggest brands handle it differently.
Enphase: dedicated generator port
Enphase's generator support page says the IQ System Controller 3G has a dedicated port for a generator, that no external automatic transfer switch is needed, and that the Enphase App can start and stop the generator remotely, show power flow, and schedule quiet time. The IQ System Controller 3/3G data sheet lists generator integration as a 3G-only feature, with a maximum overcurrent device of 80 A for the generator circuit. Enphase's generator integration tech brief for the earlier controllers states that the generator can charge the batteries and serve loads, and that the controller keeps the generator from ever connecting while the system is on grid. The brief also lists tested generator models, requires two-wire start or utility-sense control, and specifies frequency regulation within plus or minus 5 percent.
The practical point: the Enphase controller is the transfer switch, and the generator becomes one of the island's sources alongside the solar and batteries.
Tesla Powerwall: external transfer switch
Tesla's "Combining Systems with Powerwall" support page describes a different arrangement. Powerwall can be added to a home with a generator connected through an external automatic or manual transfer switch, with the Powerwall system installed between the utility meter and the generator transfer switch. The page states that Powerwall and the generator are not directly integrated and Powerwall does not charge from the generator. In an outage, Powerwall takes over first; the generator starts only when Powerwall is low or loads exceed its output. With a manual transfer switch, the homeowner moves the loads to the generator by hand.
Tesla's lineup and documentation change, so confirm the current design with a Tesla-certified installer. The Tesla gateway choices are compared in Tesla Backup Switch vs Backup Gateway.
Other hybrid inverters
Many hybrid inverters have a generator input with their own rules: minimum and maximum generator size, whether solar keeps producing while the generator runs, and whether the generator charges the battery. The installation manual is the authority. NEC 110.3(B) makes it binding, and the inspector will hold the installer to it.
Which generator
Two sizing questions, in order:
- What must it run? Add up the loads that have to stay on, with motor starting surges. The generator sizing calculator does this.
- What does the battery system accept? The generator input has a current limit, and the battery maker's documents list minimum sizes for stable operation and may list approved models. A generator outside that window either won't be allowed to connect or won't behave.
Power quality matters more here than for a plain transfer-switch home, because the generator is feeding electronics that monitor its voltage and frequency. Inverter generators and well-regulated standby units are the usual fit; see what is an inverter generator. Open-frame construction generators with loose regulation often fail the battery system's checks.

For a portable that feeds a generator inlet or a battery system's generator input, a 120/240 V inverter generator with clean output is the type to look at. Check the battery manual's compatible generator sizes before buying either of these.
A dual-fuel unit adds propane, which stores indefinitely; see dual-fuel generators. A permanently installed standby generator is the larger step, covered in standby generator installation process.
Fuel and runtime
A generator paired with a battery runs less than one standing alone. The battery carries the overnight and light-load hours; the generator runs in bursts to recharge it or cover a heavy load. That is the main reason to combine them: the battery smooths the generator's duty, and the generator removes the battery's runtime limit. Fuel still has to be on hand; see how much fuel does a generator use.
Code points the inspector checks
- NEC 702.5. Transfer equipment is required for an optional standby system and must prevent the inadvertent interconnection of the generator with the utility, which here also means with the solar.
- NEC 702.4. The generator must have capacity for the loads it will carry, whether the transfer is manual or automatic.
- NEC 705.12. The solar interconnection point must still meet the busbar rules after the transfer equipment is added.
- NEC 705.70. A battery system that islands the home does it through a microgrid interconnect device.
- NEC 445.18. Generator disconnecting means and shutdown.
- NEC 250. Generator neutral bonding has to match the transfer switch type; see generator neutral bonding.
Both the generator and the solar interconnection are permitted work. Adding a generator to a solar home usually means the installer files a revised one-line diagram so the AHJ can see where the solar sits relative to the transfer equipment.
Safety
The generator rules don't change because solar is present. Run it outdoors, well away from windows and doors, never in a garage, with working CO alarms in the house; see carbon monoxide safety. Never backfeed through an outlet; see backfeeding dangers.
