How to Shut Off Power to Your House

Two things worth doing before you need this: find your main disconnect, and understand what turning it off doesn't do.
Which switch shuts off power to a house?

The one row people get wrong is fire: do not open a burning or smoking panel. Opening the door feeds it air and puts you in front of it. Leave the building.

Do this while nothing is wrong.
Your main disconnect is usually the largest breaker at the top of the panel, often labelled MAIN and rated for the service — 100, 150, 200 amps. Some installations instead have a separate disconnect outside at or near the meter, and recent code editions require an outdoor emergency disconnect for one- and two-family dwellings. Check now:
- Where the panel is, and whether there's an outdoor disconnect too
- That you can reach it without moving anything — clearance is a code requirement and the most commonly violated one. See electrical panel working clearance requirements
- That it's labelled
- Whether there's more than one disconnect — some older installations have several and no single "off"
- That everyone in the household knows where it is
- That there's a torch nearby that works
Some panels — particularly older split-bus designs — have no single main breaker at all, and require switching off several. Worth establishing before an emergency rather than during one.
How do you shut off power to the whole house?
- Make sure you're dry and not standing in water
- Have a torch — the lights go out
- Stand to the side of the panel, not square in front of it
- Use one hand, keeping the other away from anything grounded
- Switch the main firmly to OFF
- Verify — check a light or an outlet with a tester
Turning it back on: switch individual branch breakers off first, turn the main on, then bring branch circuits back one at a time. This avoids every load in the house starting simultaneously, and if there's a fault it identifies which circuit has it.
What stays live after the main breaker is off?
The main breaker does not de-energize everything. Still live afterwards:
- The service entrance conductors from the utility
- The meter socket and the meter
- The main lugs feeding the main breaker, inside the panel
These come from the utility ahead of any overcurrent device you control. Switching off the main and removing the deadfront does not make the panel enclosure safe.

Also worth knowing: if you have solar, a battery or a generator, the main breaker doesn't necessarily de-energize everything downstream either. Those systems have their own disconnects, and the panel should carry labelling identifying all power sources. How do you shut off a single circuit?
For work on a specific circuit:
- Identify the breaker. The directory should tell you — if it doesn't, see how to find which breaker controls an outlet
- Switch it off
- Verify with a non-contact voltage tester at every outlet, switch and fixture you'll be working on
- Verify again after removing a cover plate, because a box can contain conductors from more than one circuit
- Tape the breaker off or put a note on the panel so nobody restores it

When should you not touch the panel?
Call the utility or emergency services instead if:
- The panel or meter is wet, or there's standing water near it — see water and rust in an electrical panel
- There's smoke, fire, sparking or arcing
- The panel is hot, or you can smell burning — see burning smell from an outlet
- The service drop is down or damaged — stay well clear and call the utility
- The panel is visibly damaged
- You'd have to reach across or through water to get to it

In an electrical fire: get everyone out and call emergency services. Don't use water on an energized electrical fire. Only attempt a fire yourself if it's small, contained, you have the right extinguisher, and you have a clear exit.
The utility can disconnect service at their end. That's the correct route when approaching the panel isn't safe.
Situations where this comes up
Planned work — an electrician working on a circuit, or you replacing a light fixture. Circuit off, verified with a tester.
Flooding. If water is rising toward electrical equipment and you can shut off the main safely and while dry, do it. If water has already reached it, don't — call the utility.
Storm damage. A damaged drop or mast is a utility call. Stay clear.
Before evacuating, for wildfire or flood — shutting off the main is often recommended, if it's safe to reach.

What breaks when power goes off
Worth a moment's thought before switching off for an extended period:
- Refrigerators and freezers — keep them closed
- Sump pumps — a concern if it's raining. See generator for a sump pump

Locate your main disconnect and confirm you can reach it before you ever need to. Stand to the side, use one hand, and switch it firmly off — then remember that the service conductors, the meter socket and the main lugs stay live regardless, which is why an open panel is never safe just because the main is off.
