EV Charger Not Charging: Troubleshooting Guide

Most "charger not working" situations are not electrical faults. Work through this in order — the cheap checks first — and you'll resolve the large majority without touching anything in the panel.

Rows 5 and 6 account for a surprising share of "the charger is broken" calls: the equipment is fine and the car is doing exactly what it was told. Check the vehicle's schedule before troubleshooting hardware.

What should you check first when an EV will not charge?

These account for most cases.

Scheduled charging. Is the car set to start at a specific time, or to be "ready by" a departure time? Scheduled charging is the single most common cause of "it didn't charge." Check the schedule in the car and in the charger app — if both have schedules, they can conflict.

Charge limit already reached. If the limit is 80% and the car is at 80%, nothing will happen. This is working correctly.

Connector not fully seated. DC and Level 2 connectors need a deliberate push until they latch. A partially inserted connector will not start a session. Unplug and reseat firmly.

If none of those, continue.

Step 2: Look at the indicators

The charger's status lights. Every unit has a documented pattern for standby, connected, charging, and fault. The manual will decode it. A fault indication tells you far more than "it's not working."

The car's display. Many vehicles state the reason — schedule active, limit reached, ground fault detected, communication error, or a request from the vehicle's own systems.

The app, if the charger is networked. Some faults appear only there.

Note what you see before changing anything; it's the information an electrician or support line will ask for.

Step 3: Power to the unit

No lights at all means no power reaching the charger.

  1. Check the breaker. Look for a tripped position — often visually ambiguous, so cycle it fully off then on.
  2. Check whether it's a GFCI breaker. These have a test button and trip on ground faults, not overloads. A tripped GFCI is telling you something different from a tripped standard breaker. See GFCI tripping on an EV charger.
  3. Breaker on but charger dead? That's an electrical problem — a loose termination, a failed breaker, or a failed unit. Call a licensed electrician. Do not open the charger.

Important: if the breaker trips again immediately when you reset it, stop. A breaker that keeps tripping is doing its job. Repeatedly resetting it is how a fault becomes a fire.

Step 4: Reseat and power cycle

A standard sequence most manufacturers endorse:

  1. Stop any session from the car or the app
  2. Unplug the connector from the car
  3. Turn the breaker off, wait a moment, turn it back on
  4. Wait for the charger to complete its startup sequence
  5. Plug in firmly until latched

If it works, note what happened. A single one-off is normal; a pattern is a diagnosis.

Is it the car or the charger?

The key question: is it the car or the equipment?

Test the car elsewhere. A public Level 2 station, a friend's charger. If the car charges fine elsewhere, the problem is at your installation.

Test the charger with another car. If a different EV charges fine, the problem is your vehicle.

Try the portable cord. If your car came with a Level 1 or dual-level cord, plug it into a standard outlet. If that charges, the vehicle's charging system works.

This one step saves the most time, because it decides who you call.

Why is my car not accepting a charge?

  • Charge limit or schedule, again — worth re-checking
  • A software update pending or in progress — some vehicles won't charge during one
  • The 12V battery. A weak or dead 12V battery causes strange behavior across the vehicle, including refusal to charge. This is a common and under-suspected cause.
  • Charge port fault — debris, a damaged pin, ice in winter. Inspect and clean carefully. See cold-weather EV charging.

Step 7: Charger-side causes

  • A networked charger that's lost its connection. Check whether your unit charges in an offline mode — some do, some don't. Worth knowing before you need it; see smart vs standard EV chargers.
  • A firmware update in progress or failed
  • Thermal derating or shutdown in extreme heat — a charger in direct sun can protect itself by stopping
  • Cable or connector damage. Inspect the whole length. Any exposed conductor, cracked housing, or bent pin means stop using it — see charging cable damage and safety.
  • Loose terminations at the charger or the breaker. This is electrician territory, and it's a real failure mode at high continuous current.

When should you call an electrician about a charger?

Stop troubleshooting and call if you see:

  • A breaker that trips repeatedly
  • Any burning smell, discoloration, or melted plastic at the charger, the receptacle or the panel
  • A warm or hot receptacle or cover plate
  • Visible damage to the cable, connector or enclosure
  • Buzzing or arcing sounds
  • A GFCI that trips consistently rather than occasionally

Heat and discoloration at a connection point are the classic signature of a loose termination carrying high current. That's a fire precursor, not an inconvenience.

If it's the installation

For a persistent installation problem, an electrician will check terminations and torque, breaker condition, conductor sizing against the load, GFCI type and behavior, grounding, and whether the install matches the manufacturer's instructions. A quick checklist

  • Schedule not blocking the session
  • Charge limit not already reached
  • Connector fully seated
  • Status lights / car display / app checked for a fault code
  • Breaker on; GFCI not tripped
  • Power cycle attempted once
  • Car tested at another charger
  • Another car tested on this charger
  • Cable and connector inspected for damage
  • No heat, smell or discoloration anywhere

The bottom line

Check the schedule, the charge limit and the connector seating before anything else — that's most cases. Then read the status indicators, verify power at the breaker, power cycle once, and isolate car from charger by testing each elsewhere. Stop immediately for repeated breaker trips, heat, smell or visible damage, and call a licensed electrician.
