"Slow charging" needs one clarifying question before anything else: at home, or at a fast charger? The causes barely overlap, and diagnosing the wrong one wastes time.
Why is my EV charging slowly at home?
The onboard charger is usually the answer
AC charging speed is the lowest of three limits: the circuit, the EVSE, and the vehicle's onboard charger. On most passenger EVs, the car is the binding constraint.
A 48A charger on a 60A circuit delivers 7.7 kW to a car whose onboard charger accepts 7.7 kW. That's not a fault — it's the design.

The charger's current setting
Most chargers are field-adjustable, and they're often set below their maximum — deliberately, to match a smaller circuit, or accidentally, if the installer left it at a default.
Check the setting in the app or the unit's configuration. It must not exceed 80% of the breaker rating (the NEC continuous-load rule), so confirm against your actual circuit before raising it. Use the Level 2 charger breaker size calculator.
Load management is throttling it
If your charger has dynamic load management, it reduces current when the rest of the house is drawing heavily. That's it working as designed — the charger yields to the oven and the dryer, then ramps back up when the house quiets down.

Battery conditioning is taking a share

Scheduling and utility programs
- A scheduled charging window may be pausing the session
- A utility managed-charging program may be throttling during peak periods
- A charge limit near the current level means the car is finishing its final phase slowly
Voltage drop on a long run
Less common, but real. A long undersized run causes voltage drop at high current, reducing delivered power and sometimes causing the charger to derate.
Symptoms: slower than expected on a long run, especially to a detached garage, and worse at higher current settings. An electrician can measure voltage at the charger under load. See conduit and wire runs.
Thermal derating
A charger in direct sun, in a hot garage, or with restricted ventilation may reduce output to protect itself. Check the mounting location and clearances — mounting height and placement.
Why is my EV charging slowly at a fast charger?
The charging curve — usually the whole story
Power peaks at low state of charge and tapers as the pack fills. A session that starts at 150 kW and drops to 60 kW is behaving normally.
Two implications:
- Arriving at a high state of charge means you start past the peak. Arriving at 55% and complaining about low power is a planning issue, not a fault.
- The last 20% is always slow. That's why the advice is to leave at 80%.

Cold battery — the biggest winter cause
A cold pack cannot safely accept high current, so the BMS clamps power until it warms. This can double a session.

Hot battery — the summer version
After sustained high-speed driving or back-to-back fast charges, the pack can be too hot and gets limited from the other direction.
Shared power at the station

How do you diagnose slow EV charging?
Look at delivered power (kW), not estimated time. Time estimates are noisy and update constantly. The kW figure tells you what's actually happening.
Note the conditions: starting state of charge, ambient temperature, whether the pack was preconditioned, what else the house was running.

Test elsewhere. A different charger isolates equipment from vehicle. A different vehicle on your charger does the same in reverse.

When is slow charging an actual fault?
Call an electrician if home charging is slow and you see any of: a warm receptacle or cover plate, discoloration at connections, a burning smell, or repeated breaker trips. Those indicate a loose or failing connection carrying high current, which is a safety issue rather than a performance one.
