EV Charger Maintenance: What to Check and When

An EV charger is one of the lowest-maintenance appliances you'll ever own: no moving parts, no filters, no consumables. What it does have is a cable that gets dragged across concrete twice a day and terminations carrying 40 amps continuously for hours — and both of those deserve occasional attention.

The monthly minute

A quick look every few weeks, which takes less time than reading this paragraph:

  • The cable, along its length, for cuts, abrasion or crushing
  • The connector, for cracked housing, bent or discolored pins, debris
  • The charger enclosure, for cracks, water ingress or discoloration
  • The receptacle and cover plate (plug-in installs), for discoloration or heat
  • The mounting, still secure

That's it. If nothing looks different, you're done.

What does warmth mean?

The single most important thing to know: a receptacle, plug or cover plate that is warm to the touch during charging is a warning.

Warmth at a connection means resistance, and resistance at high current means heat, and heat degrades the connection further — a runaway that ends badly. Causes are usually a loose termination or a worn receptacle whose contacts no longer grip.

If you find warmth, discoloration, a burning smell, or melted plastic anywhere:

  1. Stop charging
  2. Turn off the breaker
  3. Call a licensed electrician

Cable and connector care

The cable is the part most likely to fail, and most of its wear is avoidable:

Always holster the connector. Never leave it on the floor or the ground. Grit, water and road salt in the pins is the leading cause of connector degradation.

Don't drive over the cable. Route it out of the vehicle path and store it off the floor.

Don't stretch it. A cable under tension strains both the connector and the charger's strain relief — exactly where cables fail.

Coil it loosely. Tight coils and sharp bends damage conductors over time.

Seasonal checks

Spring: check outdoor units for winter damage — cracked housings, water ingress, corrosion at any receptacle, salt residue on the connector. Clean the connector with a dry cloth; don't spray anything into it.

Fall: confirm weatherproof covers seal properly before the wet season, clear debris from around the enclosure, and check that the connector's stowed position won't collect ice.

The multi-year electrical check

Every few years — and sooner if anything seems off — have a licensed electrician:

  • Check terminations and torque at the charger and the breaker. High continuous current and thermal cycling can loosen connections over time, and this is the check that prevents the warm-receptacle scenario.
  • Inspect the breaker, especially a GFCI breaker that has tripped repeatedly. These wear out.
  • Verify the receptacle on plug-in installs. Receptacles have a finite number of insertion cycles and daily EV use is far more duty than a range outlet ever sees.
  • Confirm the enclosure and grounding are intact.

Firmware

For networked chargers, apply manufacturer firmware updates — they can include safety and reliability fixes as well as features.

Two practicalities: update when the car isn't charging, and verify your settings afterward, particularly the current setting. A unit that resets to its maximum on a smaller circuit is a real problem. Check against the Level 2 charger breaker size calculator.

Vehicle-side: the charge port

Easy to forget, and worth a look:

  • Inspect the port for debris, corrosion or bent pins
  • Keep the port door closed when not charging
  • In winter, don't force a frozen port door — some vehicles have port heaters; otherwise let it thaw
  • Clean gently with a dry cloth only; never spray liquid into the port
