JuiceBox EV Charger: What Happened, and What to Do Now

If you own a JuiceBox, you did not do anything wrong. The charger stopped being supported because its parent company left the continent, not because you chose badly. This guide covers what actually changed, what still works, and how to decide between keeping the unit and replacing it.

What happened to JuiceBox

Enel X Way — the Enel subsidiary that made JuiceBox — announced on 2 October 2024 that it was ending its North American business, and ceased operations on 11 October 2024. The company pointed at financial conditions: high interest rates and a changing EV market.

Three things followed:

  • Commercial JuiceBox stations lost their functionality when the software behind them was discontinued. Networked commercial charging depends entirely on a backend, and the backend went away.
  • Residential JuiceBox units generally kept charging cars, but lost the smart layer — the app, scheduling, energy reporting, remote control.
  • The original app stopped working for most owners in July 2025.

Since then, VoltiE Group has taken over support for JuiceBox hardware. Owners who need to change settings — maximum charging current, most importantly — register the charger through VoltiE's support site and use the VoltiE app. Confirm the current process with VoltiE before you count on it; a third party maintaining another company's abandoned hardware is not the same as a manufacturer standing behind a product.

The safety question, stated plainly

In October 2024, NHTSA's Office of Defects Investigation opened Preliminary Evaluation PE24028 into JuiceBox Level 2 residential chargers. At the time it opened, ODI had six complaints:

  • Two alleging fires — one a garage explosion and house fire, one a vehicle fire while charging
  • Four describing electrical malfunctions, tripped breakers and interrupted charge cycles

Two things are true at once here, and both matter.

Six complaints is a small number against a large installed base, and a Preliminary Evaluation is an inquiry, not a finding of defect. It is not evidence that JuiceBox chargers are dangerous as a class.

But there is no manufacturer left to issue a remedy. Normally an investigation like this ends in either a clean bill of health or a recall with a fix. With Enel X Way gone from the market, the ordinary path to a repair does not exist. That asymmetry is the real reason to take the decision seriously rather than the complaint count.

Check the current status of the investigation on NHTSA's site before deciding, and file a complaint there if you have had a problem — that database is how patterns get established.

Signs to stop using it immediately

These apply to any EV charger, not just a JuiceBox:

  • A burning or hot-plastic smell at the unit, cable, or receptacle
  • Discoloration, melting or scorching on the plug blades, the receptacle face, or the enclosure
  • The receptacle or plug body is hot to the touch after charging
  • Repeated breaker trips — a breaker doing its job repeatedly is reporting a fault, not being fussy
  • Visible damage to the cable or connector (cable damage and safety)

Any of these means stop charging and get an electrician to look at the circuit and the receptacle. On plug-in installations the receptacle is a frequent failure point in its own right — a worn or under-rated NEMA 14-50 heats up regardless of which charger is plugged into it.

If you keep it

A JuiceBox that charges reliably and inspects clean is not an emergency. If you keep yours:

  1. Inspect it and the receptacle now, and again periodically — see the list above.
  2. Register with VoltiE if you need to change the amperage setting or want app support.
  3. Let the car do the scheduling. Nearly every EV can schedule its own charging by time or departure. That replaces the single feature most owners actually used the app for, and it does not depend on anyone's server staying up.
  4. Do not rely on it for load management. If your installation depended on the charger throttling to protect a tight panel, that is a function you cannot afford to have running on abandoned software — see EV charger load management.
  5. Know your circuit. Find the breaker size and whether it is hardwired or plug-in. You will need this the day you replace the unit.

When to replace it

Replace rather than keep if any of these describe you:

  • Anything on the warning-signs list above, ever
  • The unit has become unreliable — intermittent charging, faults that need a power cycle (EV charger not charging)
  • Your install depends on load management to stay within panel capacity
  • You need utility rate program participation, which often requires a specific approved networked model
  • You are not comfortable running a 40- or 48-amp appliance that no manufacturer supports, which is a legitimate position and not paranoia

What to replace it with

The circuit is the expensive part of an EV charger installation, and yours already exists. A replacement of the same or lower amperage drops onto it with no new wiring — which makes this a few-hundred-dollar decision rather than a full installation.

Two rules worth carrying out of the JuiceBox experience:

Buy a charger that works without the cloud. Ask explicitly whether the unit charges in a standalone mode with no server connection. Cloud features should be a convenience layered on a charger that works, not the thing that makes it work. Match the replacement to the circuit you already have. A NEMA 14-50 receptacle supports a 40-amp charger; 48 amps requires a hardwired 60-amp circuit. Confirm with the Level 2 charger breaker size calculator and NEMA 14-50 vs hardwired before ordering.

If your JuiceBox was hardwired

Disposing of the old unit

A JuiceBox is electronic waste with copper in it, not household trash. Municipal e-waste collection takes them, and many electrical supply houses and scrap yards will accept the unit and cable. If the charger is hardwired, have the electrician who installs the replacement remove it — the circuit has to be de-energized for the swap anyway.

If you are selling a house with a working JuiceBox mounted on the wall, disclose what it is. A buyer who discovers the situation afterward will not be pleased, and the honest version — a functioning charger on a good circuit, no manufacturer support — is not a hard sell to someone who wanted a charger anyway.

Frequently asked questions
