The down payment is the one number in a car deal you fully control, and it does four separate jobs at once: it lowers your monthly payment, cuts the total interest you pay, reduces your loan-to-value ratio, and — most importantly — keeps you from owing more than the car is worth.
The familiar "20% down" rule is a shortcut to that last goal, not a law.

What does a down payment actually do?
Every dollar you put down is a dollar you don't finance. That single fact produces all four effects:

The first two are arithmetic. The fourth is the one that protects you financially, and it's the one most buyers underweight.
The equity problem, and why EVs make it sharper

Being underwater isn't a problem while you keep driving and paying. It becomes a real problem in three situations:
- The car is totaled or stolen. Insurance pays the vehicle's value, not your loan balance. You owe the difference in cash.
- You need to sell or trade early. You have to cover the gap to clear the lien.
- You want to refinance. High LTV limits your options.

Some models hold value strongly on steady demand and a good battery-longevity reputation; others fall faster when newer models arrive with more range. Sizing your down payment
Work backward from the outcome you want rather than starting from a percentage.
Step 1 — Estimate the value curve. Look at actual used listings for the specific model at one, two and three years old, as a share of its original price. That's your realistic depreciation path, and it beats any category average.

Step 3 — Close the gap. Raise the down payment, shorten the term, or both, until the balance stays at or below the value.
Two shortcuts if you'd rather not do that work:
- The 20/10 rule of thumb. Roughly 20% down on new, 10% on used, keeps most buyers near or above water through the early years.
- The term substitute. If a large down payment isn't realistic, a shorter term does much of the same job — it pays principal down faster, so equity arrives sooner. A modest down payment on a 48-month loan often leaves you better positioned than a bigger one on an 84-month loan.
When is a smaller down payment the right call?
Bigger isn't automatically better. Put down less when:
- You'd drain your emergency fund. Cash in a car is trapped. A deductible, a repair, or a job gap is far more expensive to handle without reserves than a slightly higher payment is to carry.
- The financing is genuinely cheap. With a low promotional APR, keeping cash liquid can be worth more than the interest saved — provided you keep the term short so equity still builds.

Trade-in equity counts as down payment
If your current vehicle is worth more than you owe on it, that positive equity functions exactly like cash down. If it's worth less than you owe, the reverse happens — the shortfall typically gets rolled into the new loan, and you start the new car already underwater. Get the trade valued independently before you shop. A trade-in figure and a purchase price are two separate negotiations, and bundling them makes it easy to lose track of which one moved.
What the down payment does not fix
- It doesn't make an overpriced car a good deal. Price first, financing second. A big down payment on an inflated price just means you funded the overpayment in cash.
- It doesn't offset a long term. Down payment lowers the starting balance; term controls how fast it falls. You need both to stay above water.

A practical checklist
- Decide your maximum total monthly cost first — payment plus insurance, charging and maintenance.
- Keep at least a few months of expenses liquid; that money is not available for the down payment.
- Get an independent trade-in valuation before negotiating.
- Aim for a term of 60 months or less; go shorter if the payment allows.
- Check the projected balance against the projected value at year one and year three.
