Standby generator quotes vary widely, and the generator itself is frequently the smaller half of the total. Understanding the components explains the spread.

The two that blow budgets are gas supply and placement. An existing gas meter often cannot feed a generator plus the furnace and range at once, and clearance rules from windows, doors and property lines can force a longer, costlier run.

What's in the price

1. The generator

Priced by capacity, and the range is wide — from small residential units covering essentials to large whole-house models.

2. The transfer switch

Either a service-rated switch transferring the whole service, or a subpanel switch feeding selected circuits.

3. Electrical work

  • Feeders between the generator, transfer switch, and panel
  • A disconnect at the generator
  • Control wiring for automatic start

Cost scales with distance from the panel to the generator location.

4. The fuel supply — often the surprise

Natural gas: a standby generator is a large gas load, sometimes comparable to all your other gas appliances combined. Consequences:

  • The gas line from the meter to the generator may need to be larger than expected
  • The meter itself may need upsizing, which is utility work on the utility's schedule
  • Long runs and difficult routes cost more

Propane: a tank sized for meaningful runtime — typically hundreds of gallons for standby use — plus the pad or anchoring, the line to the generator, and either purchase or a lease agreement. Placement is regulated with setbacks. See propane tank sizing for a generator.

Ask about the gas supply early. It's the most common source of both cost surprises and schedule delays.

5. The pad and site work

A stable, level base — a poured concrete pad or a manufactured composite pad. Cost depends on site access, grading, and whether excavation is needed.

6. Permits and inspections

Typically electrical and gas/plumbing permits, sometimes a building permit for the pad, and occasionally zoning review for placement and noise setbacks.

7. Commissioning

Startup, load testing, controller configuration, and exercise scheduling. Should be included — ask.

What makes quotes diverge

Before comparing numbers, confirm all quotes cover the same scope:

  • Generator capacity and model
  • Transfer switch type — service-rated or subpanel, with or without load management
  • Fuel supply work — is meter upsizing or a tank included, or excluded pending survey?
  • Distance from the generator to the panel and the gas source
  • Pad — concrete or composite, included or not
  • Permits — included, and who pulls them
  • Trenching and restoration
  • Commissioning and load test
  • Warranty — equipment and labor, stated separately

A quote that's a single number is not comparable to anything.

Ongoing costs

Frequently omitted from the buying decision:

Weekly exercise cycles consume fuel year-round. Modest per cycle, continuous over years. See generator exercise mode.

Annual professional service — oil, filters, plugs, battery test, transfer switch inspection. Usually a warranty requirement, and worth keeping records of.

Battery replacement every few years. The most common standby failure point.

Fuel during outages, which is the cost you actually bought the system for.

Where to save

Right-size it. The single biggest lever. Sizing for genuine simultaneous peak instead of using load management is expensive and rarely necessary.

Load management instead of capacity. Cheaper than a larger generator, and you barely notice.

Minimize distance. Placing the generator near both the panel and the gas source cuts feeder and gas line costs. Walk the site with the installer before deciding location.

Confirm the gas supply early. Finding out about a meter upsize after signing is worse than knowing upfront.

When is standby worth it?

  • Outages are frequent or long
  • You're away often, or outages happen while you sleep

  • You want the house to feel normal rather than survivable
